Faculty

In addition to the clinical faculty, the Section of Pediatric Endocrinology and Diabetology consists of Diabetes Educators, Nutritionists, and Social Workers who participate in the care of children with diabetes. All of the staff have years of experience dealing with the particular difficulties faced by children with diabetes and their families. They are an invaluable source of information and support.

Dietitians

A major part of the care of the child with diabetes is healthy nutrition. Our team of Registered Dietitians specialize in diabetes education and are up-to-date on the latest dietary research and guidelines.

You will get acquainted with our Dietitians :

  • during your child's hospital stay
  • at your first outpatient appointment
  • during the ADAPT educational program

When your child is first diagnosed, one of our dietitians will sit down with you and discuss your child's eating patterns, likes and dislikes, and you two will come up with guidelines for their meal plan.

Our goal is to help you and your child understand and adapt to the daily care needs of diabetes. This will include teaching you how to adjust diabetes management to your child's individual food and activity schedule. The care of the child with diabetes has changed drastically and you may be pleasantly surprised to learn that your child can continue to make food choices the same as any other child, including eating birthday cake and other sweets you may have assumed were no longer allowed.

We use a "Carbohydrate Counting" system which is easy to learn, and our Dietitians will be glad to help you with:

  • menu planning
  • school lunch planning
  • school events
  • birthday parties
  • holiday dinners
  • how to adjust to exercise routines.

Our Dietitians are available to answer questions related to your child's meal plan from Monday though Friday 8am - 5pm. Call your Dietitian's office and leave your question and they will return your call as soon as they can.

Nurse Educators

Another major portion of the care of your child will be insulin administration and learning what the signs are for high and low blood sugars. These and other issues are included in our 3 day Survival Skills curriculum we offer at Riley Hospital.

When your child is first diagnosed, our diabetes nurse practitioners will sit down with you and discuss what diabetes will mean to your child, how you will be able to adapt, give insulin, and monitor for dangerous signs and symptoms of high or low blood sugars. We will teach you the basics so that when you return home you will have the knowledge to safely care for your child. The pediatric nurse practitioners work together with the doctors, dietitians, and social workers to bring you the information you need to feel comfortable going home.

We will follow-up with you by phone for the first few weeks, and then see you at your first outpatient appointment. We will also see you at the ADAPT classes which are designed to teach families more about diabetes, how to adjust insulin for changes in activities, and answer questions in a group format. Many families enjoy this because they learn from other families and have an opportunity to ask specific questions.

You will have 24 hour backup so don't be worried!

If you have routine questions during the week (M-F , 8am-5pm) please call our office at (317) 274-0274 and press the number for the physician that you see. If they are busy, please leave a message with your name, phone #, your child's name, your question, blood sugars, and urine ketones. If you have an emergency during those hours, call (317) 274-3889 and tell the secretary the above information, and she will page the nurse on call who will call you right back.

If you have an emergency after hours or on the weekend, please call (317)274-5000 and ask for the Pediatric Diabetes Doctor on-call. Remember to always have your important information ready for them (Follow the "When to Call" guidelines).

Social Workers

The Social Worker is a member of the Diabetes Treatment Team who supports the child, family, and staff by:

assessing the social situation and needs providing access to needed resources and assisting with problem solving.

As a foundation for ongoing management, the newly diagnosed child and family is assessed to determine particular needs, such as:

availability of family and others to help participate in the care links with school or daycare other community resources which may be needed to support care.

Where needs are identified, the social worker helps the diabetes team and family obtain resources and to work out problems which may interfere with the child's opportunity to have the best diabetes management.

The team recognizes that the impact of a new diagnosis is often shock, and is certainly a challenge. Through our educational program in diabetes management much of the natural anxiety is lessened. There may be additional issues, however, which compete with and distract from the family's ability to provide care as needed. The Social Worker is someone who understands and can help the family to meet these challenges successfully .

You can expect to see a Social Worker during:

your hospital stay at the first outpatient appointment in the course of the ADAPT educational program at community conferences.

The Social Worker is available by telephone, directly, and through other members of the Diabetes Team.

Riley Hospital Social Workers for Diabetes are:

  • Julane Petroy (full-time) 317-278-7258
  • Sarah Milestone (Wednesdays) 317-274-1720.
