Types of Hearing Aids

All hearing aids consist of a tiny microphone, amplifier, speaker and battery. These components are packaged differently according to the style of the hearing aid. Behind-the-Ear (BTE)The BTE hearing aid fits behind the ear. A short plastic tube conducts sound from the case to an earpiece that fits inside the ear. A BET can be fitted for any hearing loss and is worn with an earmold. It has large controls which are easier for some people to adjust and is considered to be a powerful aid. It is usually fitted for patients with the most severe hearing losses. Inside-the-Ear (ITE)An ITE aid fits in the outer ear and extends into the ear canal. It is all in one piece. Sound is conducted by the receiver into the canal. The aid is useful for all patients but those with the most severe hearing loss. Inside-the Canal (ITC)This hearing aid is similar to an ITE except it is much smaller and fits entirely within the ear canal. Inside-the-canal hearing aids are for those patients with mild to moderate hearing loss. Completely-in-the-Canal (CIC)All the components in the CIC are housed in the molded aid and fit in the ear canal. It is almost invisible and may be fitted to patients with mild to moderately severe hearing loss.
